SOKENDAI KOSEN Internship

The SOKENDAI/KEK KOSEN internship program provides technical-college students with an opportunity to experience research using large-scale experimental facilities and to learn how research is carried out at KEK. This page records activities related to muon science and is intended to grow with annual schedules, photos, student projects, and teaching materials.

Muons are a type of elementary particle. They continuously reach the Earth’s surface as a component of cosmic rays and can also be produced in large numbers using particle accelerators for a wide range of scientific studies. Their fundamental properties—such as mass, lifetime, and spin—are important not only as subjects of particle-physics research themselves, but also for many applications. In this program, participants will build compact particle detectors with their own hands, investigate the properties of muons, and take on experiments in muography and muon spin rotation using cosmic-ray muons.

Activities

In 2025, we hosted one participant in August and another in September, each for a one-week training program. The participants constructed particle detectors using plastic scintillators and photomultiplier tubes, and observed cosmic-ray muons and decay electrons/positrons by analyzing waveform data recorded with an oscilloscope. Through coincidence measurements to identify penetrating muons and timing measurements of decay particles, they gained hands-on experience with the basic principles of muography and muon spin spectroscopy. In the August program, the participant studied the east–west effect and temporal variations of cosmic rays, while in September, the participant investigated the elemental composition of samples through muon-lifetime analysis.

Activities

In 2024, we hosted one participant for a two-week training program from August 19 to 30. The participant constructed a cosmic-ray muon detector using plastic scintillators and photomultiplier tubes, and developed both a PC-controlled data acquisition system for an oscilloscope and Python-based waveform analysis software. By measuring and comparing muon coincidence rates above and below ground, the participant evaluated muon transmission and demonstrated the basic principle of muography. The detection system was further extended with a SiPM and LYSO scintillator to observe not only penetrating muons but also decay electrons and positrons, providing a basis for further studies of the muon lifetime and spin.
