    ABSTRACT

Quarkonium spectroscopy has been a traditional testing ground for theoretical methods. Lattice QCD gives a model-independent determination of the properties of quarkonium. Recent improvements in lattice methods are providing dramatically precise determinations of the mass splittings of low-lying states. These improvements point the way to more challenging calculations that will guide the experimental discovery of new excited states, including spin exotics and multiquark states. I review the current status of numerical simulations of quarkonium mass splitting in lattice QCD and discuss the challenges that lie ahead.
